PPWD and Southeastern Railway are the 2024 winners of the UK Company Culture Awards, 'Best Culture Transformation Initiative.'

The judges' comments included: "A beacon of proactive change and employee empowerment. This teams reflective mentality, embracing lessons learned along the way, demonstrates a forward thinking mindset that is essential for sustained success. We particularly liked that all employees were included and played a pivotal role in the transformation journey.

This success continues from the earlier Stevies Award and demonstrates the depth and breadth of our collaborative approach with Southeastern Railway.

PPWD were awarded a 2023 Stevie International Business Award for the category Health, Safety and Environment programme of the Year.

This was awarded for an ongoing cultural evolution programme.  The impact of which has resulted in a Year 1 ROI of 1.4 and a Year 2 ROI of 4.7.  A dramatic drop in operational incidents has been backed with a reduction in staff turnover, disciplinaries and absenteeism.  Increased dialogue between frontline and management has focused on the co-creation of safety.  Additionally, a notable increase in reporting and identification of eroded safety margins before the adverse event occurs, has also taken place.  PPWD's courses and workshops achieved an exceptional Net Promoter Score of 93+ out of 100, and a course critique average of 9.5/10.

Whilst our incident trends continue to improve overall and our main strategy is to take a holistic approach to incident reduction, all incident numbers and trends are reviewed weekly and periodically at the Operations Learning Review which enables us to be agile in our approach to our strategy and briefings for drivers.

This approach has seen us reduce the ratio of incidents per driver from 0.43 to 0.14 in the past few years, which is a 67% reduction.

Safety learning reviews are now being used in a broader safety management system that includes ongoing risk assessments, training and communication.”

PPWD were awarded the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors inaugural Demonstrated Impact Award in 2023.  This was awarded for the highly successful employment of human factors training to reduce operational incidents and evolve a fairer culture within Southeastern Railway.

At Southeastern, our journey towards embedding a fair culture has been supported by PPWD at every step.  From early conception to the launch of our Fair Culture Charter we have worked collaboratively with Paul Davison.  Whilst acting as consultants, PPWD have immersed themselves into our organisation and are effectively seen as an extension to our team of safety professionals and have helped to guide us in the right direction, checking in along the way and supporting the development of our culture change programme.'  Steve Lewis - Head of Safety and Environment - SE
